Re: Yet another foodscare :-(
There's one of these "doctors" (a woman)who makes some ridiculous claims, my favourite being that GM maize will make you fat "because it is designed for fattening livestock" - err, well yes but designed to fatten them by growing more corn per acre, not by altering their metabolism!
Anyway she's clearly made a nuisance of herself, because the only board certified physician with that name I can find makes a point of including her middle name and always stressing that she's a specialist in emergency medicine only. Poor woman

Alcohol = Cancer. It had to happen eventually.

Why don't we just take any disease off the shelf and link it to any foodstuff under the sun, preferably the more enjoyable the food the worse the disease.

Err, Sakkarin it has been established for decades that alcohol is linked to cancer (notably liver cancer, but not only that of course)
That article is only looking at why there isn't wider awareness of that link, not proposing a new finding
It's an interesting example of how health scares only look at half the picture, loads of stuff about alcohol and coronary artery disease, damn all about the link between alcohol and cancer in the public domain, and if the drinks industry is discouraging that awareness as alleged then that needs to stop

It's always been a risk factor - but that definite link seems certain nowadays. It's irrefutable no matter what the drinks industry will have us believe.
We cut drinking back some time ago.
Starting with 2 consecutive days at first, Sun and Monday. And now we have 5 days a week without.
I do hope it means I'll see 90.

I have never Heard of so many disasters with our food supply, except across the Blue Pond regarding Gmo horrors ..

Re: Yet another foodscare :-(
The main problems on the Iberian Peninsula ( Spain ) are the Distributors / Suppliers that sell to the Supermarkets ..
There is an enormous waste factor ..
And there is a legal labelling required and many of these suppliers do not label properly ..
People are definitely more informed and very aware of what to look for in their purchasing ..
Spain is relatively a small country ( size of Texas, they say however, Spain is smaller, I believe ) & still extremely traditional in the rurals and outside of the main cities ..
Now, I shop at the La Mercat de La Boqueria, which is a Central Market .. Not a supermarket .. Most of you know it who have been to Barcelona ..
I do not buy too many products in supermarkets except for El Corte Ingles or Makro which are top of the line and Bio / organic or natural and they sell to the Chefs wholesale ..
Have a lovely evening .. and I hope that all this eventually gets sorted out and solutioned ..
Have a great weekend.
I purchase several things ( local cheeses, local wines, local herbs, veggies and fruits ) from tiny boutique local farms.

Perhaps then she'd have made even more money if she'd had special tee shirts printed
There is some disagreement about recommended limits for alcohol intake. UK guidance was altered a couple of years ago to 14 units (10ml)/week for both men and women because of the carcinogenicity iirc, so we are out of step with other countries, both for amount and having the same limits for both.
There is no doubt amongst those who know that alcohol is carcinogenic, but less certainty about how dangerous low exposure is. It's a similar issue with sunlight and bacon I guess.
Re: Yet another foodscare :-(
I didn't realise it was for the carcinogenicity, I thought it was just coz they are miserable old so-and-so's that don't want us to enjoy ourselves
Seriously though, my average is around 14 units a week. I'm not an alkie, but I would certainly miss it if I wasn't allowed alcohol, I love a nice cool beer on a warm evening

Re: Yet another foodscare :-(
There is absolutely no agreement on safe drinking limits, in particular no agreement on the differences in capacity between men and women
Perhaps worth clarifying that each unit is 10 g of alcohol (ethanol) which is one 25 ml measure of 40% spirit, but many spirit measures are more than 25 ml, and most wine glasses are more than one unit, a 125 ml (small) glass of 12% wine is 1.5 units so a pub large glass of 250 ml contains three units
Surprised I haven't seen a phone app for tracking this
P.S. one unit = 55 calories

There are other health issues with alcohol of course, but my understanding was that the reduction (for men) from 21 to 14 10ml units per week was due to concerns about carcinogenicity.
Calorie wise I suppose it depends upon the drink. Neat spirits or those with low calorie mixers will be less calorific than beer or wine of equivalent alcoholic content. The beers I drink typically are 2 units a pint and around 180 calories.
