What a surprise
After he stopped teaching M became a professional genealogist - a hobby he had enjoyed since uni days and now there is so much available on line one he continues to enjoy.
He has just made a really nice discovery about my 4xgreat grandfather, one Matthew Bates a miner who lived in Newcastle. He was a founder member of the Newcastle Horticultural Society and specialised in growing ranunculus, pinks and picotees for which he became famous in the area. So much so that he had one named after him Bates Yellow! I would love to see one but have not had time to go agoogling today.
I am riduculously pleased
Any ideas anyone?
