Boitre aux Lettres

Postby cherrytree » Sat Aug 10, 2013 8:52 pm

The other day when the postlady called she gave us a mild telling off about our letter box. This wasn't entirely easy as she speaks with a very broad Lozerian accent, but we think the gist of it was that she couldn't post parcels in there. We looked at the post boxes in M. Bricolage this afternoon and they all seem to be approved by the French postal service. What do we need to do?

Hi cherrytree as you have had no answers maybe it would be easier to ask the French poste about this rather than a Brit (although members from all over the world) forum. Maybe some don't speak French or know that Boitre aux lettres means a post box? From what you say it sounds rather like the American Mail box.

Hi Cherrytree

Really sorry I keep forgetting this forum.

Yes, La Poste does specify a certain size and style of box. They are quite large and need to be fitted either to an outside wall or on a post. Not many houses in this hameau have one, only the new houses. Ours is legally far too small but it is part of the gate, looks pretty so we keep it. Our postman is absolutely lovely, as was the one before him and they are quite happy to open the gate and put any parcels on the garden table ot even in the house, if the door is open - it is a very short garden!!!

Same for all the old houses. We collect parcels for anyone who is not in and vice versa so all, at the moment is simple.

This being France though, we would only have to have a new facteur and we could all be introuble. Sufficient unto the day ------- :D
