Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Marvellous. I wouldn't have gone to Tesco otherwise. Thank you - that's nice and affordable.
Got the leg o'lamb for £12.
Leaks (creamed), carrots, potatoes and kale. I'll cook the pots under the lamb slow whilst we are out on our bike ride (if it stops raining).
Didn't realise till now on the salmon, Pampy.
I'd have bought some too if I'd seen it.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
How was your lamb, Sakkarin?
Ours was fabulous, very very tasty. The gravy was nicely intense - I just use meat juices cooked in wine. I'm used to buying my lamb from the butchers, but this one was great.
And what a price!
We'll have the same tomorrow.
I sometimes make it into a shepherds pie, but we'll have a roast dinner again.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Not food this time but kit.
I try not to buy kit, firstly because I'm on a tight budget, but also because my cupboards are groaning with jumble sale quantities of cooking stuff.
However some things aren't quite right when I'm cooking just for myself, and for my Cottage Pie earlier this week I had a choice of either weeny dishes, or circular, or oval, or the enormous pyrex dish I ended up using, which resulted in a quite thin pie.
So although I tried to avert my eyes, in the end I couldn't resist this bargain in Tesco, it's the perfect size and shape for Shepherd's/Cottage pie/moussaka/lasagne, and was half price at £2.50.
It's alongside the one I used during the week in this piccy.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Those small roaster dishes are such a useful size when cooking for one of two of you. We've got 2 white ceramic ones for moussaka/lasagne/fish pie etc./bread and butter pudding.
Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
I have a similar size ceramic one (well, eartheware probably) to the new pyrex one, but it's a bit too shallow to do those layered dishes properly

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Thanks for the hint.
I've got no pyrex left. Bought a new bowl at Christmas, but it arrived in several pieces.
Someone put it in the box without any filling.
Tescos bargain again!
They're on fire at the moment ......

Oh dear, with butter now at a horrific £3.20 for 500g, I have succumbed to a special offer of Clover (pretend butter) at £1 for 500g. Includes "sustainable" palm oil. I wonder if that is a weasel word.
Haven't tried it yet, it may end up in the bin, it is a long, long time since I last used one of the pretend butters.

James Wong has been tweeting about palm oil today, in the wake of Iceland planning to remove it from their product
Apparently there is such a thing as sustainable palm oil, it means palm oil from old establiched and well managed (replanted as needed) plantations . Or possibly on land cleared in the 20th century for rubber plantations that are no longer needed, Also I hadn't realised that you get a lot of palm oil per hectare, seems it's a relativley efficient way of producing food from that lan (better than rice or banans for example)
Very complex subject
Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Can I suggest people keep any spread in the fridge if they're not partial to it and use it for greasing Pyrex dishes etc. Spread works much better than butter or oil as it washes off rather than burning on

Top tip Jeral!
This is an article on palm oil that James Wong recommends

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Thanks for the article Stokey Sue. Many of the world's problems are caused by knock-on effects with true interrelatedness effects being learned long after the causal action and in the last 100 years multiple causal actions. The daftest destruction has to be bombs and emissions from jets that do nothing but carry them, but there are none so blind as those who cannot see. Tinkering around the edges of forestry reparation is good too - if it doesn't inadvertently make things worse. Brain hurt stuff without a magic wand.
Meanwhile, there are a lot of bargains around. Presumably post Easter when people are "eating the freezer". I do suspect though that other prices are being deliberately loaded to compensate and also be in readiness for future offer reductions. Hmm.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
On my way to Morries today, thanks Sue.
I was only saying yesterday, that the Easter eggs were still on the shelves at full price, Renee.
Good for Asda getting back to how it should be. On offer after the event.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
I went to our local Aldi store today for the first time in ages. One of the things I bought was a 250ml bottle of Grade A Pure Canadian Maple Syrup, it only cost £2.99. It's probably their normal price, but a bargain compared to the equivalent size in one of the Big Four supermarkets. It's in a properly shaped glass bottle too!
Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Good spot, "Tesco finest" is over £4.00 for 250g.
I am still angry at buying carob masquerading as maple syrup on special offer a couple of years back. "Blended" sesame oil annoys me too, it is mostly cooking oil.

Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
I've had the Aldi maple syrup before, it's good
Re: BARGAIN BASEMENT
Sakkarin, if you have an Aldi nearby, Norpak spreadable which contains 64% butter, 26% rapeseed oil, water and lactic cultures is gorgeous and only £1.89 normal price for 500g.
