Faggots!!

Postby hungryhousewife » Fri May 18, 2012 7:11 pm

I was very lucky this week, as I was given some homemade faggots by a friend. They hadn't used cawl fat, but just bound them into large faggot shapes. He explained what had gone into them, and I think it sounds very similar to the recipe in Darina Allen's book Forgotten Skills of cooking.

Hubby and I had them for supper last night with some roast courgettes (which went surprisingly well), buttery mashed potatoes and good old Bisto!! Gosh they were good!!!!

Anyone else tried making faggots? I would have been put off by the thought of trying to get cawl fat, but these were really good. I've heard of some people criss-crossing bacon to hold them in shape too.

i've never made my own - the lack of caul has always stopped me. Waitrose sell little fresh ones wrapped in bacon, and they are lovely - as are the homemade one from a butcher near us in Titchfield.
If you do make them, please report back, as I love them - even the cheap frozen ones are edible to me!!

Yes, if I do I will. He told me of the programme on the telly showing what went into commercial faggots!! He said it was horrendous!

Thanks Lush - that looks lovely - I've printed it off and will stick in Darina's book, so I can look at both recipes together.

Poor luvvie!! My hubby is like that with chicken thighs. He says they make him gag - however, he had some delicious enchiladas the other night, and had seconds, and would have had thirds too. Didn't have the heart to tell him either!

Hi Luscious, that link doesn't work for me it said that the recipe cannot be found?????

H.H. We also discussed faggots on the Beeb board in March

I still have caul fat in the freezer plus the other ingredients but haven't got round to making them yet - was only thinking about them and when to make them a couple of days ago. Food plans for the weekend are Osso Buco tomorrow (it's in the oven now) and a Mallard on Sunday, must try to make the faggots next week.

I made faggots many years ago, but wrapped them in bacon. They were really good.

I made faggots many years ago, Delia Smith recipe I think. I didn't use caul fat, just shaped them and they were great.
The only problem was the time spent in making them, but that was when I was young and eager to try anything. Now I just buy the commercial variety, only trouble is, I have to make extra gravy!!!!!!

Gary Rhodes recipe is very good - but not as good as my Grans! The butcher in Stow on the Wold does a mighty fine one too!
