This evening in Sainsbury's and the Tannoy announces 50% reduction on some fresh food in aisle three. Hot-foot over to No 3 to find a smallish trolley thing like a multi-storey veterinary gurney for small animals. Pies, sweet pastries, odd bits of meat....all marked with a vivid yellow 'reduced' sticker. I'd bought Dover Sole for this evening and was looking for something sweet to follow....a nice-looking pack of two pastries was marked £1.10 reduced to £0.74. Oh. That's not quite 50% reduction is it, I asked the assistant by the trolley? "No, it isn't, we reduce the price by 50% and then add 5 pence", he said. "That's still wrong, that would make it 60p, not 74p", I said. "It's close enough", said the assistant, "we find that it reduces waste".
